Course: Technical Communication I
Technical Communication will cover communication skills on the job,
building teamwork skills, basic grammar and technical writing
skills. Effective reading, listening and speaking tactics will also
be addressed.
This course is dedicated to the writing process and writing
mechanics. Students will learn fundamental writing skills,
including: grammar and mechanics, thesis statements, topic sentences
and supporting details, paragraph writing, the parts of an essay,
unity and coherence, and other essential and basic writing skills.
Students will also discover what makes good writing by reading and
sampling good writing, as well as by practicing it. Writing
activities will include writing essays, notes and outlines, letters,
research papers, job applications and resumes, news articles, and
more. This course will offer students a chance to explore their own creative side through writing. Students will model their writing after published authors. They write poetry and prose. Students will also keep a journal. In addition, they will learn to edit their work.

Students will address basic writing skills necessary for the job
place “with or without a college education.” The class will focus
on the correct steps in writing simple papers of fact or opinion.
Special emphasis will be placed on how to prepare and present
technical information in written fashion.
Students will study various journalistic styles and apply different
methods to the writing of articles themselves. Issues such as
ethics in journalism, presenting accurate, unbiased information and
writing techniques will be highlighted.
This grammar course will teach topics such as grammatical structure,
using proper syntax, phonetics, phonology and semantics.
This course helps prepare students to meet the demands of the 21st
Century. Students will play a game that simulates life, called “The
Real Game.” Through this game students will learn about careers and
the world of work, personal budgeting, civic responsibility and
community involvement. Students will develop their communication
skills, learn more about technology and improve their teamwork
skills.

This course is intended for students who plan to attend college.
The students will engage in the critical skills needed in college.
They will improve their composition structure, logical organization
and breadth of their vocabularies. Techniques of effective writing
will be emphasized. Students will write 4 research papers.
This class
will be an extension of the parliamentary skills learned in 9th
grade Agriculture. Parliamentary Procedure is all about teamwork
and the fun of debating two sides of an issue. Interested students
will have the chance to compete in the Regional FFA Parliamentary
Procedure contest in early January.

Learn how to develop self-confidence, entertain, tell stories,
interview for jobs, become skilled at argumentation and debate,
demonstrate, and communicate in the world of work. Learn how to use
your speaking skills to your advantage.
Students who participate in competitive speech are encouraged to
take this class. Advanced topics in competitive speech giving will
be discussed in addition to other topics such as debate, teaching,
salesmanship, and business presentations. Students, who are
considering careers in law, teaching, business, sales, or the
clergy, might find this class useful.
This course helps students to make essential college and career
decisions. Students will do in-depth research into their chosen
fields. Students will learn how to secure a job. Time will be
spent learning about post-high school training. A mentoring project
will be developed for each student to take a closer look at his or
her chosen profession.
Students will be involved in a five-week mentoring program in which
they will learn more about their chosen profession. Students will
explore the world of work through a more advanced career program to
prepare them for the world of work. Emphasis will also be placed on
communication skills. Students must be able to drive to their work
sites. |
